How to teach your dog the command "remains"

March 26, 2010 by me No Comments »

The "rest" is one of the most important step of learning in 'education of the dog. The success of the response may not only save his life in danger, but also makes you safe from unpleasant situations in which a well-behaved dog that is able to patiently await the return of his human friend, makes all the difference. It may happen that your Pelosini is not well accepted in a place where you absolutely must go. In banks, post offices, the bakery is right on the way home from the park, the school where you have a conversation with teachers in your child ... in short, the dog is there at the leash with you, tMPO is short, and you have no way of separating his walk from a thousand other things to do. A dog trained to be a good sport among the committees that crowd your day because you will watch a short distance without batting an eyelid, without trying to uproot the tree around which you have tied the leash, not jump on him to passersby and especially without trying to pick you up with all the costs when you leave. He knows that coming back, because it will clear in his head clever what "remains". So after having taught the sitting and the earth, here is a new command.

Preparation

An area fenced secure area will be fine dogs at a time not too busy. > Some tasty treats or special favorite game of your friend to use as a prize (the technique of "positive reinforcement"). At least twenty minutes every day for a couple of weeks, to allow the dog to learn the exercise well.

Instructions

Give the dog the command "sit" or "land" in front of you, take a couple of steps back holding his hand, palm open to him and say, "remains" flatly. Wait 5 seconds before moving in his direction and will be rewarded if it remained stationary in position. If after 5 seconds the dog stopped, came back to him (before moving) to reward and praise him enthusiastically. Reward the dog when he's not only you will be moved from the position, otherwise repeat. The dog must wait seated (or land), if the reward will come after you meet, will confuse the results. </ li> Repeat the exercise by gradually increasing the time to stay in front of him and distance. Do not give away the first few times, step back and looking into the palm toward him to give him the 'alt'. Do not expect too much from your four-legged friend, every dog has his day of learning: an anxious person will clearly harder to accept the separation, but do not give up nor spazientitevi, the results will come. If you do not arrive, you are probably wrong that the exercise!
