How to teach your dog to "sit"

March 17, 2010 by me No Comments »

One of the basic commands that you must give the dog early in the educational process is the "sitting". This simple exercise is essential for behavioral control, because a puppy who waits patiently for his or jelly that is able to wait until you prepare to exit without being a hindrance, is a dog at a good point in his educational process. From this simple exercise start all subsequent steps of education.

Instructions

Keep in right hand a game or a treat, judge you based on your personal knowledge of the dog, what makes the higher the motivation to do what they ask yourself. There are dogs who jumped for the ball in the fire, others totally indifferent to the games but who are halfway across the world a stranger for a biscuit. Draw the attention of the dog and let him recognize the stimulus that you are using (game or food) allowing him to smell and see it clearly, but without letting him take it. Put yourself standing in front of the dog, lean slightly forward, his right arm relaxed with the hand where you hold the play / bite just above his head. Let it be forced to raise his head and back to follow the movement of your hand. If you are backing away, follow him, first with his hand then possibly making some progress. Do not move a lot to him though, when the dog no sign of bending the hind legs, stop the exercise, distraetelo not get him the award, and after a couple of minutes try again. i> If the dog tends to bend the hind legs as if to sit, keep in action until it is fully seated. With the dog in a seated position (not in the air but with the rear right-side) would allow him to steal the game or the bite (be careful not to press while raising the rear from the ground to grab the stimulus that we are teaching the " sit ", the dog must be rewarded if you are seated) If you realize that the dog has understood that to achieve the desired object must sit down, repeat and while folding the rear legs, say "sit" with an encouraging tone. Handing over the award accompanied the gesture with a caress with your left hand and praise him enthusiastically (bravo!) Repeat for one quarter of an hour every day for at least a month. When the dog will tend to sit at the mere sight of the object (food or games) you want, pronuncerete however the word "sit". Is deemed to have the command when the dog sits without any kind of prize and the word "sit". But when you stop pressing, do not forget, especially the first time, praise him enthusiastically for having learned his first command.
